Veterans Day

CELEBRATE

📝 Overview

This lesson plan (LP) guides students to develop their visual literacy, creativity, and critical thinking skills by studying the U.S. holiday of Veterans Day. Students will gain an understanding of how symbols can convey meaning and practice interpreting the symbols many Americans use to honor veterans on this holiday. They will then design a poster that honors someone they value, using symbols they choose.

🎯 Student Goals

As a result of this lesson, students will be able to:
  • strengthen visual literacy, communication, creativity, and critical thinking skills
  • reflect on how symbols express larger feelings or ideas
  • make connections between American Veterans Day symbols and symbols used in their own culture
  • explain their reasons for visual choices in poster design
